Chemical carriers, gas carriers and reefers need clean, dry nitrogen for inerting, purification and cargo filling. Onboard nitrogen generators are the most efficient way to provide this service. There are two main types of nitrogen generators. One uses hollow fiber membrane technology, and the other is based on a variable pressure absorption (PSA) process. Nitrogen can also be produced by inert gas generators. Molecular sieves remove the carbon dioxide present in the inert gas.

- Membrane Technology - The air we breathe contains approximately 78% nitrogen, 21% oxygen and 1% other gases such as argon and water vapor. Membrane systems utilize this unlimited supply of raw materials to produce nitrogen of a specific purity.

Selective permeation is the general principle of membrane systems. Each gas has a unique permeation rate, which is a function of the ability to dissolve and diffuse through the membrane. The "fast" gases, O2, H2O, CO2, permeate through the membrane wall faster than the "slow" gases, thus separating the original mixture into two streams. The driving force of the separation process is the partial pressure difference, which is created between the compressed inlet side and the low pressure side of the membrane.

The membrane separator consists of a bundle of hollow fibers in a cylindrical housing, arranged much like a shell and tube heat exchanger. Compressed air is fed into the inlet side of the separator and flows inside the hollow fibers to the other end. During this process, air molecules begin to penetrate the fiber walls according to their permeability. Oxygen, carbon dioxide and water vapor permeate faster than nitrogen and the result is a super-dry nitrogen stream at the outlet end. The secondary oxygen-rich stream is vented to the atmosphere.

- The variable pressure adsorption (PSA) process consists of two absorption towers filled with carbon molecular sieves. Compressed, purified air passes through the towers and oxygen is absorbed on the carbon molecular sieves while the nitrogen-rich gas leaves the towers. While absorption is taking place in one tower, the second tower is regenerated by returning to ambient pressure and the oxygen-rich gas is discharged from the system.
